Teaching

GLY201: Historical Geology

This course examines the chronological history and development of the earth, the sequence of the geologic ages and rock formations, and the development and evolution of life as revealed by fossils.

The focus on, 1) the principles used to interpret past physical, biologic, and chemical events archived in rock record, and 2) the history and development of the earth’s lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.

GLY325: Stratigraphy and Sedimentation

This course examines the origin, transportation, and deposition of rock-forming sediments and the formation, organization, sequence, and correlation of sedimentary rocks. The primary focus is on understanding the processes involved in the formation of sedimentary rocks, with the ultimate goal of interpreting ancient depositional environments from outcrop and drill core. Includes an introduction to petrographic analysis of both siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary rocks. Fundamental principles of correlation and stratigraphic analysis are also addressed.

GLY451/451: Geomorphology

This course examines the principles of identification and analysis of the Earth’s surficial features in terms of stratigraphy, structure, processes, tectonics, and time. The focus is on processes that operate to shape the Earth’s landscape and landforms and surface materials that develop in response to those processes. Students learn; 1) the basic principles governing geomorphic processes, 2) how to ascertain chronology of and geology processes responsible for landscape formation, and 3) how application of this knowledge is important to human society and infrastructure.

GLY455/455: Hydrogeology

An introduction to the occurrence, distribution, movement, chemistry, utilization, contamination, protection, and remediation of water resources especially groundwater. The course emphasizes applied aspects of aquifer properties, groundwater flow, contaminate transport, and the interconnection of surface water and groundwater.

GLY456/456: Environmental Geology

The course considers the problems and issues associated with the interaction between the natural environment and mankind. Focus is on the risks posed by natural geo-hazards and from physical / chemical contamination of geologic media. Demonstrates the application of geologic knowledge and data for development of technological solutions to site-specific environmental problems.

GLY457/457: Engineering Geology

An introduction to the engineering applications of geology emphasizing methods of assessing and mitigating geologic constraints on construction, mining, waste disposal, and water resource development and management.  Major topics include physical properties, mechanics, and classification of soil and rock.
