I am also interested in taxonomy, systematics, paleontology, morphology, and various phenomena specific to scorpions, including in particular their&nbsp;<em>sensory organs<\/em>. I also collaborate on projects in molecular evolution of other animals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I am actively involved in systematics,&nbsp;faunistics, and taxonomy of scorpions, and published widely on this subject. With my co-authors, I published the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.marshall.edu\/fet\/euscorpius\/catalog2000.htm\"><em>Catalog of the Scorpions of the World (1758-1998)&nbsp;<\/em><\/a><\/strong><strong>(2000), a &#8220;yellow pages&#8221; book listing about 1300 species and 170 genera of the existing scorpions, plus about 100 fossil species.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another aspect of my research concerns evolution, biodiversity, and biogeography of desert and mountain animals and&nbsp;biotas, especially in Central Asia and the Balkans. I work with local collectives of biologists as an editor on production of definitive monographs in biodiversity and biogeography. Two of such monographic works have been published,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Biogeography-Ecology-Turkmenistan-Monographiae-Biologicae\/dp\/0792327381\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1275338994&amp;sr=1-1\">Biogeography&nbsp;and Ecology of Turkmenistan<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>(1994) and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/west\/home\/new+&amp;+forthcoming+titles+(default)?SGWID=4-40356-22-173712209-0\">Biogeography and Ecology of Bulgaria<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>(2007).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I have traveled intensively with research purposes, both for field work and museum work. In 2001-2002, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/\">National Geographic Society<\/a>\u00a0sponsored my expedition to Central Asian deserts to study scorpions there. My overseas field travels over many years took me to Mexico, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Austria, France, Russia, Slovenia, and New Zealand; I worked with scorpion collections in the natural history museums of the USA, England, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Greece, and Bulgaria, and studied collections loaned from dozens of other museums. I run a number of cooperative projects with researchers from many countries.\u00a0In 2005, I was on a sabbatical leave as a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/cies\">Fulbright Scholar Program<\/a><\/strong> grant recipient in Bulgaria; and in 2012, on a sabbatical leave as a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/cies\">Fulbright Scholar Program<\/a>\u00a0grant recipient in Greece.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I am also the co-editor (together with Frantisek <strong>Kova\u0159\u00edk<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>and Michael E. Soleglad) of<em>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/mds.marshall.edu\/euscorpius\/?\">Euscorpius<\/a>&#8220;, the Occasional Publications in\u00a0Scorpiology<\/em>, an online, open-access, peer-reviewed research journal and the\u00a0<em>only\u00a0<\/em>research periodical completely devoted to scorpions, mainly to their systematics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>NOTE THAT <em>&#8216;Euscorpius&#8217;<\/em> is now fully migrated to Marshall Digital Scholar:<br><a href=\"http:\/\/mds.marshall.edu\/euscorpius\">http:\/\/mds.marshall.edu\/euscorpius\/\u200b<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Since its inception in 2001, &#8220;<\/strong><em><strong>Euscorpius<\/strong><\/em><strong>&#8221; published&nbsp;399&nbsp;issues authored by&nbsp;254&nbsp;zoologists from&nbsp;53&nbsp;countries.  <\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 2002-2024,\u00a0426<\/strong><strong>\u00a0new species and\u00a030\u00a0new genera of scorpions \u200bfrom\u00a081<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>countries have been described in \u201c<\/strong><em><strong>Euscorpius<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My additional interests within biological sciences concern\u00a0history of biology.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I translated into English a seminal and nearly forgotten Russian work\u00a0on\u00a0<em>symbiogenesis<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geo.umass.edu\/margulislab\/Margulis_Lab_Site\/Welcome.html\">Boris M. Kozo-Polyansky<\/a>\u00a0(1924). The book was published in May 2010\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geo.umass.edu\/margulislab\/Margulis_Lab_Site\/News.html\">by Harvard University Press<\/a>.\u00a0This work was co-edited, encouraged and promoted by Professor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geo.umass.edu\/faculty\/margulis\/\">Lynn Margulis<\/a>\u00a0(1938-2011),\u00a0the\u00a0leading authority on symbiogenesis and the original author of the serial endosymbiotic theory (SET)\u00a0of\u00a0eukaryotic cell origin. On 24 September 2010,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.marshall.edu\/fet\/euscorpius\/Margulis_24%20Sept%202010_Poster.pdf\">Professor Margulis came to Marshall University<\/a>\u00a0to celebrate\u00a0publication\u00a0of this important book.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another large translation project embraced an anthology of early writings in human genetics from Russia compiled by V.
